| Sometimes, indeed often, there are no further court appeals available. All appeals have been exhausted, time limits have expired, or there are simply no appealable issues. Other than the individual simply serving out her sentence, parole and commutation (sentence cuts/modifications) may be the only option left. Jackson & Presson offers a comprehensive parole and commutation assistance service. We prepare parole "packets" or commutation requests that contain all of the information necessary for the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board to make a decision whether to grant parole or recommend a sentence commutation. Packets include legal arguments in favor of parole, letters of support from family and friends, and other documentation to show that parole or commutation should be granted. We work with the client and his family to prepare for the parole hearing. If no family member or friend is available or willing to address the Pardon and Parole Board, we will. Otherwise we will work with the person who will speak for the inmate and prepare her for her appearance. We collect all of the information for the parole packets, assemble it in an excellent presentation booklet, and mail the appropriate number of copies to the Parole Board members and offices. If parole or commutation is recommended, we send additional information to the Oklahoma Governor's Office to support the parole or commutation recommendation, and offer to meet with the Governor's legal staff. In some very rare instances it is possible to seek an early parole or commutation hearing. The Board, in the past, was more willing to consider early paroles. Recently, however, since March 2004, the Board is granting an early hearing about once every other month. Finally, there are some services that "guarantee" parole will be granted, sentences commuted or reduced, or some other relief. Nobody can guarantee any specific result. The Board members' votes are independent, and any person or company suggesting they have particular influence with a Board member or the Board in general is misleading you. |
